Happy Thanksgiving from Mercer Ocean Podiatry!

The holidays are approaching quickly this year and as we draw closer to Thanksgiving, we realize there is a lot to be thankful for. This year is unlike any other with a global pandemic changing the way we live our lives and celebrate our holidays. However, regardless of the situation, each year we all pause to consider things for which we are thankful for. We are thankful for our families, a safe home, our health, and this year especially - to our front line workers.

This week, Dr. Sameep Chandrani of Mercer Ocean Podiatry wants to take time to thank the hardest working and least appreciated part of our body - the feet!

Let’s understand why these amazing and complex structures keep us walking, standing, exercising over a lifetime. It is your feet and the ability to walk and exercise pain free that is usually taken for granted, but not this year! I would like to share some personal tips, practical ideas, and impart some knowledge on ways to thank your feet this Thanksgiving:

1) Can anyone remember the last time they looked on the bottom of their feet? Most people don’t. This Thanksgiving, take time to do a complete foot check and make it a part of your routine! Performing a daily foot check for any new issues while also making sure to clean your feet and in between the toes is very important. Always make sure to dry thoroughly between your toes once cleaned!

2) Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Very important to avoid cracking and peeling of the skin, which serves as a barrier between your body and the outside world. Make sure to do that daily and to avoid applying lotion between your toes! With the dry heat from our home heaters during the winter months, skin tends to dry out quicker this time of the year compared to the summer! Make sure to moisturize.

3) Always cut your nails straight across as opposed to being rounded - this helps prevent ingrown nails and potential infections from occurring!

4) Make sure to wear comfortable shoes! Always wear shoes that are stiff soled and only able to bend at the toes. Wearing flexible shoes can put more stress on your arches and result in pain that could radiate up your leg or even aggravate existing issues like plantar fasciitis.

5) Stretching and exercising is important. Make sure to stretch regularly through out the day to keep your feet from tightening up. Doing so regularly can help prevent tendonitis, tendon tears, and sprains.

6) Specifically for the holidays - monitor your salt intake. Too much salt in your diet can increase swelling in your legs, and result in more weight on your feet. This can cause your feet to pain and potentially ruin your holidays. Our advice is to stay hydrated, eat mindfully, and exercise some of the delicious food off!

7) If you have diabetes, work with your health care team to control your blood sugar. As mentioned before, choose healthy foods and exercise everyday, with your doctors' permission


Most importantly, cherish your families and friends and be thankful for all the positive things in your life during this time of year. We are thankful for all of our amazing patients like you!
