The pain and discomfort from having flat feet may vary from person to person. There are some patients who do not have pain at all with this condition, whereas there are patients who have difficulty in completing daily activities with flat feet. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and the arch generally forms during the teenage years. For those people who approach adulthood with flat feet, there may be existing medical conditions that can cause it. These are generally hereditary, and can include Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Marfan Syndrome. A proper diagnosis consists of having CT and MRI tests performed, and it is beneficial to have an X-ray taken that can determine if there is arthritis in the feet. Relief may be found when custom-made orthotics are worn, which can make it easier to complete daily activities. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly fit you for orthotics, in addition to providing you with other helpful relief options.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Foot Pain Prevention for Cyclists

It may seem improbable, but riding a bicycle can cause immense foot pain. The main reason for this pain is that all the force expended during a ride goes through the soles of the feet. For that reason, especially if you ride often and for a long duration, heel and arch pain can develop. Cycling footwear and cleat position are often involved, along with other causes, such as plantar fasciitis. If plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, is ignored, it also may result in calcium deposits. Biomechanical issues, such as ankle pronation, flat feet, or high arches can lead to Achilles tendonitis. Certain exercises before and after each ride can help to reduce arch soreness, and orthotics can go a long way toward prevention of biomechanical issues. In addition, wearing cycling shoes that fit properly can lower the risk of foot pain. For more information about custom orthotics and foot pain from cycling, please consult a podiatrist.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Toes

Individuals living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may experience swelling in certain smaller joints in the body, including those in the toes of the feet. RA can cause a number of different toe conditions to be aware of. Notably, it can cause claw toe, which is a condition where the toes essentially twist or bend into a position that resembles a claw. People with rheumatoid arthritis may also have bursitis, which is when the fluid sacs in the joints become aggravated and inflamed. Another common toe condition for those with RA is corns of the feet, thick areas of skin that develop in response to friction. These are just some of the different relevant toe conditions for those with RA. It is important to note that people with this kind of arthritis can experience a combination of different toe conditions at the same time, which can make wearing shoes especially uncomfortable. Contact a podiatrist today if you are living with rheumatoid arthritis and want to protect your toes.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Mercer Ocean Podiatry. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Medical Attention for a Broken Foot

When an individual breaks their foot, there are two ways in which they can endure a fracture. First, one can suffer a direct injury from a high impact activity or from some kind of blunt force trauma (i.e. falls, collisions, etc.). Second, an individual can endure a stress fracture from repeated overuse in physical activities. Regardless of the cause of the broken foot, medical attention ought to be immediately sought out. Sometimes it may be difficult for an individual to recognize that their foot has been broken. However, if you notice foot pain after a fall or some kind of impact injury, it is recommended that you contact a podiatrist as soon as possible. Upon receiving medical attention, your doctor may take an X-ray of the foot, especially if there is tenderness in key areas or if the patient can not bear weight on the affected foot. To detect a stress fracture, a doctor may choose to perform an MRI, as this procedure helps identify bone edema, which develops before a stress fracture. Contact a podiatrist today if you believe you have broken your foot.

A broken foot requires immediate medical attention and treatment. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Mercer Ocean Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot typically breaking when bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.

Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blue in color
  • Numbness
  • Cold
  • Misshapen
  • Cuts
  • Deformities

Those that suspect they have a broken foot shoot seek urgent medical attention where a medical professional could diagnose the severity.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated.
